The Textbook Saga….

Lawd a massy! A wha dis now! Sodomite an battyman dey inna school book?! Jezas
scrise , a wha di country a come to! I can see it now — book burned and banned, civil servants fired, teachers rebuked, authors disgraced, and a journalist rewarded for exposing the sneaky ways that those gays are using to indoctrinating everyone, and now they’re after our dear children!
Why yes, that’s exactly what we are doing, an yuh nuh see nutt’n yet!
Seriously, the quote (taken from the article) about which the Gleaner is actively stirring shit up:
“Today, there is much discussion about what constitutes a family. There seems to be a broadening of the traditional definitions of a family structure. When two women or two men live together in a relationship as lesbians or gays, they may be considered as a family. They may adopt children or have them through artificial insemination. – An excerpt from the book ‘C-SEC Home Economics and Beyond (Management)’ by Rita Dyer and Norma Maynard”
Notice how the reporter treated and framed the story as if it was a scandal, and sought out all kinds of support for his biased treatment of the issue.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news to the outraged ones, but…gay men and lesbians who live together as a couple/triad ARE a family, whether or not they brought children into the union, they adopted children separately or together, or they decided to use alternative insemination to produce children. That’s not a passing fad. It just IS, and right ya so inna Jamaica!
You know what we should do? Take pictures of our families, put them together in a photo album and sen’ it go gi de Ministry! Or, send them one, one. Or, send a letter to each of children’s teachers and principals — and the Ministry and the Prime Minister too! – telling them how much we appreciate this token effort, and look forward to more such efforts to educate our children rather than proselytize to them. Maybe I’ll do a petition. I don’t know how to do that, but I can find out.
Meanwhile, Chief Education Officer, Jasper Lawrence of the Ministry of Education has denied that the book was ever approved by the MoE, and Andrew Holness, the Minister of Education has called for an investigation. Waste of time. He needs to bury the story, talk with the principal of that “prominent school” and develop a plan to update all the teachers on the latest educational practices and knowledge.
What this whole furor has revealed is far more frightening than I had imagined. You basically have a bunch of people who none of us know about, who were not elected to office, who are selected based on ideology, and who probably don’t have any credentials let alone a background in education, deciding what our children should know, and what they shouldn’t know. By his words, I cannot figure out how the Ministry’s practices are any different from what Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture and Education does. Maybe you can.
This is just a case for why we need more independent schools, and more progressive parents, educations and concerned citizens organized and engaged in every corner. Too many idiots and wannabee politicians are being allowed to take up our time and money. I feel like we have let these religious fundamentalist nuts dominate all the public discussion. I don’t want to hear one more thing about the Church, and what it should be doing and can do! The Church, whatever the hell that is — if you mean the Herro Blair-Devon Dick-and all the other fundamentalist passing as Christian, well — you know what I think about them.
